The Minolta Dynax 9xi, also known as the Maxxum 9xi or α-9xi, was Minolta's flagship 35mm film SLR from its third generation of autofocus system cameras. Introduced in the early 1990s, it featured a data setting thumb wheel near the shutter release and an LCD display under the focusing screen for exposure manipulation. Designed for professionals, particularly in sports photography, it boasted a fast focal plane shutter capable of 4.5 frames per second and speeds up to 1/12000 second, with a maximum flash sync of 1/300 second. Its intelligent autofocus system could predict movements in three dimensions, powered by a 16-bit 20MHz microprocessor utilizing "fuzzy logic" algorithms with data from a 14-field metering sensor. The camera also supported an image lock mode for series photography with automatic zoom adjustment and was compatible with the new Minolta 5400xi system flash, which could be remote-controlled for TTL flash photography. Special chip cards were available to simplify the use of its advanced features.
