The Olympus AF-1, released in 1986 and also known as the Infinity (US) or “Nurepika” (Japan), is notable for being the world’s first weatherproof, fully automatic 35mm compact camera. Manufactured in Japan, it features a 35mm f/2.8 Zuiko lens with four elements in four groups, autofocus with a ‘focus lock’ option, and fully automatic film loading, advancing, and rewinding. Its built-in automatic flash is powered by a CR-P2 lithium battery and has a recycling time of approximately 1–1.5 seconds. Additional features include a 12-second electronic self-timer, automatic exposure with shutter speeds ranging from 1/30 to 1/750 seconds, and a sliding lens cover for protection. Weighing approximately 225g without battery, the AF-1 stands out for its ease of use, making it popular among both beginners and experienced photographers seeking convenience. Its robust weatherproof design and reliable lens contribute to consistently sharp images with balanced tones, making the Olympus AF-1 a significant model in the history of point-and-shoot film cameras.
