The Canon AF35M (also known as the Sure Shot in the USA) is a 35mm lens-shutter point-and-shoot camera introduced by Canon in November 1979 and notable as Canon’s first autofocus compact model. It employs an active triangulation autofocus system using a near-infrared emitter and photodiode, enabling accurate automatic focusing independent of ambient light. The camera’s fixed 38mm f/2.8 lens features manual ISO setting (25–400) around the lens barrel and utilizes a CdS photoresistor metering cell positioned inside the filter ring for reliable metering even with filters attached. Fully automatic film advance and rewind are provided, though film must be manually threaded onto the take-up spool. Other features include a built-in retractable flash with auto-exposure and fill-flash functions, projected framelines and indicators in the optical viewfinder, self-timer, and power supplied by two AA batteries. The AF35M measures 132 × 77 × 54 mm, weighs 405 g, and was manufactured in Japan, with production reaching up to 110,000 units per month by 1981.
