The Nikon EL2 is a 35mm SLR camera introduced in 1977, notable for its electronically-controlled shutter and aperture-priority automatic exposure function. As the successor to the Nikkormat ELW, it was among Nikon’s first cameras to support AI (Automatic Indexing) lenses, utilizing a modern F-mount and a silicon photo-diode (SPD) light meter for more accurate metering. The EL2 features a fixed prism and a fixed focus screen, and provides electronic shutter speeds from 1/1,000 to 8 seconds, as well as a mechanical 1/90 second speed for shooting without a battery (PX28 type). It offers exposure modes including manual and aperture-priority AUTO, with a full analog needle display in the viewfinder for metering and settings information. Additional key features include a wide ASA range, exposure compensation dial, auto-exposure lock, and compatibility with the AW-1 winder. The Nikon EL2 was discontinued in favor of the Nikon FE in 1978, but remains a significant bridge between Nikon’s earlier mechanical SLRs and more modern electronic models, highlighting advancements such as improved metering, AI lens compatibility, and enhanced user ergonomics.
